The Honda Civic Type R: A high-performance hatchback that has taken the world by storm

All new Honda Civic Type R to make local debut at Simola Hillclimb

Based on the 11th generation Civic, the latest, Civic Type R has been developed in Japan and track tested around the world, breaking records in the process. The Type R aims to combine class-leading performance with an all-new immersive cockpit experience and a sleek, muscular new design.

Last year during development testing this Type R set a new production-car front-wheel drive record at the Suzuki circuit in Japan and last month a production model set a record for a front-wheel drive car around the iconic 20.8-kilometre Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany, which is considered the most challenging road circuit ever devised. The official measured lap record of 7 minutes 44.881 seconds demonstrates the improved dynamic performance of the powerful Civic Type R.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R embodies Honda’s challenging spirit, leveraging their deep roots in competition with racetrack proven engineering to deliver thrilling performance both on the road and on the racetrack.

The Honda Civic Type-R is expected to make its long awaited South African debut at the 2023 Simola Hillclimb next month, where it will compete at South Africa’s premier motorsport event at the hands of local motorsport personality Deon Joubert.

Under the bonnet

Under the vented bonnet is a more powerful version of Honda’s K20C1 engine that has been treated to a redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate and new more efficient exhaust system. The result is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 234kW at 6 500rpm.

The Type R’s smooth and precise six-speed manual transmission has been improved in order to offer an even more intimate and rewarding connection with the driver. A lighter flywheel and revised rev-match system ensure perfectly paired rev-matching when downshifting. The high-strength gearbox has also gained a high-rigidity lever and optimised shift gate pattern for a reassured and hyper-precise gear change. A standard helical-type limited-slip differential assists in putting power down while cornering.

Functional design

Beautifully integrated advanced aerodynamics give the new Type R a sleeker, more sophisticated, yet muscular look. Designed with input from aerodynamic specialists of the HRD Sakura Super GT team, its exterior is more aerodynamically efficient, generating more downforce and improving high speed stability. For example, the new wheels use a special reverse rim design that improves the stability of the tyre contact patch under load.

All body panels forward of the A-pillars are new and unique to the Type R, including a new more aggressive front bumper design. Its lower stance is accentuated by wider rear doors and a reshaped rear bumper that houses the signature three round exhaust outlets. A redesigned rear spoiler with aluminium stanchions and a new rear diffuser intensifies downforce and reduces drag.

Being based on the 11th generation Civic has also resulted in a more rigid body structure, longer wheelbase and wider track that supports improved dynamics and refinement. A retuned dual-axis strut front and multilink rear suspension improve straight line stability and steering feel. Two-piece front brake rotors reduce unsprung weight and cooling, resulting in exceptional braking performance.

Drivers can choose from pre-set performance settings, selecting different modes for the engine, steering, suspension and engine sound. In addition to Comfort, Sport and R+ Mode, a new Individual mode enables customisation of the driving experience.

Driver focused interior

The interior has been designed to facilitate intense driving experiences and includes performance focused details and features, including the Type R’s iconic red seats, carpet and trim, a redesigned aluminium shift knob and serialised Type R plate on the dashboard.

The seating position is lower in a lighter, body stabilising sport seat finished in suede upholstery.

The Type R’s exclusive new digital instrument cluster features clean, easy to read graphics and an extensive selection of displays including a large tachometer, gear position indicator and multi-information display. A secondary display exclusive to R+ mode showcases critical information at a glance such as engine speed and gear position as well as an illuminated rev indicator.

The large 9-inch colour touchscreen offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. A new enhanced version of the Honda LogR Performance Datalogger combines the Type R’s onboard computer and sensors with a new app that helps the driver monitor and record a variety of performance parameters in real time.
