Honda unveils 2023 Civic Type-R

Honda has unveiled the most powerful Civic Type-R yet

The all-new Honda Civic Type-R is set to be the most powerful model in the Type-R’s 30-year history and has been engineered with the purpose of delivering thrilling performance and an addictive driving experience, both on road and on the racetrack.

Although specific details are yet to be released it is believed that under the bonnet is a more powerful and responsive version of Honda’s turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, naturally featuring renowned VTEC technology. This engine will be paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and rev-matching system ensuring an intimate and rewarding connection with the driver.

Apart from the most powerful version of their two-litre, four cylinder turbocharged engine yet, the Civic combines class leading performance with a low and wide design and a new immersive high performance cockpit experience.

A more mature design

While the previous generation Civic Type R was wild in design, the latest iteration is significantly toned down and more mature in appearance.

The longer, lower and wider design features beautifully integrated aerodynamics to aid down force and reduce drag. An aggressive front bumper design features a sporty honeycomb grille mesh that is mirrored by the intricate honeycomb trim inside the cabin, in addition larger front fender grilles and a new side sill behind the front wheels enhance airflow efficiency. Wider rear doors accentuate the more aggressive stance. Completing the aerodynamic package is a redesigned rear spoiler and a reshaped rear bumper that houses three round exhaust tips in a new rear diffuser.

Flared wheel arches cover lightweight wheels that have been reduced from 20-inches to 19-inches in size, but are wrapped in wider 265/30 Michelin Sport 4 S tyres.

Chassis refined for performance

The Type R is based on an evolution of the same chassis as that of its predecessor, which mans that the front wheel drive will continue to use its innovative dual-axis strut front suspension that helps mitigate torque steer.

A lightweight and highly rigid body helps improve high speed stability and scalpel sharp responses, while driving feel is further enhanced by suspension and steering performance upgrades.

The result of this evolution saw the 2023 Civic Type R recently set a new production car front-wheel drive record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.

Inside story

The interior supports intense driving experiences with performance focused details and features. Iconic red seats, carpet and trim and a numbered Type R plaque on the dashboard are new. Suede like upholstery is said to keep occupants firmly in their seat during high speed driving. A stubby titanium gearshift ensures precise shifts and optimum driver engagement.

A +R driving mode meter design allows the driver to view necessary information at a glance, with a graphic engine rpm display, shift lights and gear position indicator.

The Honda data logger provides real-time information on the mechanical movements of the vehicle and includes a stopwatch to record lap times and the ability to share driving videos.

On top of the dashboard is Honda’s 9.0-inch touchscreen, which should feature technology such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Pricing and availability

Local pricing and availability is yet to be announced but the 11th generation Honda Civic Type-R is expected to make its way to South Africa in 2023.
