Honda launches XL750 Transalp in South Africa

The new XL750 Transalp is designed for all-round, long or short distance touring in comfort, with the ability to conquer urban environments, highways, mountain passes and off-road terrain in comfort.

A key objective in the design of the new Transalp was to strike a balance between easy handling and comfortable touring performance on paved and unpaved roads. A high-performance engine, all-new design and modern equipment ensures that the Honda Transalp ticks all the boxes that today’s riders demand.

A large fairing with flush surfaces ensures comfort on highways as it balances wind protection and aerodynamic performance. 21mm of ground clearance facilitates great off-road ability. The headlight is compact in design while still ensuring excellent visibility while the integrated screen balances a fearless facial expression, wind protection and aerodynamic performance. The rear features an exclusive aluminium carrier and LED tail lamps. The long-legged stance makes a strong statement of adventurous intent, while the fairing and screen work together to deliver wind protection without adding bulk and the result is an overall look that is sleek, simple and clean.

To ensure that the engine is both lightweight, compact and powerful, Honda employed a number of design strategies. The primary gear now serves as a balancer gear for both the front and rear in order to reduce weight and size. A 270-degree crank was adopted to cancel the secondary oscillation. A unicam valvetrain has been employed, which utilises a smaller valve angle made possible by one cam which facilitates more efficient combustion. A linear layout from the throttle body to the intake port contributes to improved power output.

The engine incorporates a large amount of Honda’s engineering prowess into a small space and offers excellent power delivery throughout the rev range with plenty of usable torque in the low to mid rev range. The all-new parallel twin-cylinder unit boasts 67.5kW and 75Nm, which is delivered smoothly thanks to refined throttle by wire settings. 

Electronic rider aids include five riding modes, four of which comprise pre-set combinations of engine braking, ABS and Honda Selectable Torque Control with integrated wheelie control. A slipper clutch reduces clutch drag torque by 30 percent, for a lighter load and easier up shifts.

The result is an engine that provides usable, enjoyable performance for a wide variety of riding and for riders of all experience levels. Honda claim that the Transalp will use just 4,3 litres per 100km which results in a potential range of 390km from the 16,9-litre fuel tank.

The steel diamond frame is light weight thanks to optimization of wall pipe thickness and stiffness. Top quality suspension in the form of Showa 43mm SFF-CA USD forks with 200mm of travel and a rear shock with 190mm of travel fitted via the Pro-Link configuration ensure supple on-road performance and off-road bump absorption. Dual twin-piston callipers provide efficient stopping power while 18-inch tyres front and rear ensure versatility on or off-road.

A seat height of 850mm is low for the class and the riding position is upright for natural control and leverage. A five-inch TFT colour display ensures vivid information delivery and management of all systems. All lighting is LED. A full range of accessories are available which allows owners to personalise the Transalp according to preference and intended use.
