Honda CB500X launched in South Africa

Honda updates mid range CB500X

Honda CB500X offers dual purpose ability in a stylish package

Honda’s mid-range adventurer, the CB500X has been treated to several improvements and is now available in South Africa.

The CB500X brings crossover adventure style to the middleweight class, paired with a fun-focused twin-cylinder engine. The perky, twin-cylinder engine produces real torque and drive from low down in the rev range and offers an extremely comfortable ride around town and out on the open road, complete with a styling package befitting its adventurous package.

Updated wheels and suspension

The 2022 model has now been updated with high quality front suspension in the form of Showa 41mm SFF-BP USD forks, dual front discs, a lightweight swingarm, redesigned front wheel as well as a striking new colour and bold new graphics. Handling is further improved by the redesigned, lighter swingarm.

The forks now comprise spring preload-adjustable Showa 41mm USD forks with 135mm axle travel, clamped by new top and bottom yokes, which has great benefits for reaction and ride quality. The single-tube rear shock absorber with its large diameter piston and 135mm axle travel features five-stage preload adjustment as well as optimised spring rate and damper settings.

Braking performance has also been optimised and upfront the CB500X now utilises dual 296mm wave pattern discs and axial mounted Nissin two piston callipers. A redesigned 19-inch cast aluminium front wheel reduces unsprung weight and is paired with a 17-inch rear wheel, both are fitted with trail pattern tyres.

In comparison to the previous model, the weight bias has also been moved fractionally forward, resulting in enhanced front tyre grip and feel on a tyre that is now larger in diameter.

Modern styling

The CB500X is dressed in an aggressive adventure style that includes long radiator shrouds and fairing and perfectly integrated side covers and fuel tank that also does a great job of keeping the rider out of the wind. Upfront the mudguard is now significantly larger. The chiselled headlight has been fitted with extra powerful LEDs and visibility is improved thanks to front indicator position lights, all lighting is LED.

The updated CB500X will be available in Grand Prix Red, Matt Gunpowder black metallic and pearl organic green.

Refined two-cylinder engine

The CB500Xs 471cc eight-valve liquid cooled, parallel twin-cylinder layout offers a great balance between physical size and enjoyable power output. Improvements focused on quicker acceleration through the mid-range and have resulted in an energetic, high-revving character and a zappy top end. Peak power of 35kW is reached at 8 600rpm while maximum torque of 43Nm is delivered at 6 500rpm. The exhaust exits in dual mufflers, contributing to a sporty pulse that transforms into a rasping high-rpm howl.

Easy to ride

The CB500X can morph between short-hop commuter and weekend tourer effortlessly. Long travel suspension does a great job of smoothing out irregular road surfaces, wide handlebars provide leverage, and the upright riding position ensures comfort and a wide field of view.
